Hi, I did not select any of the options as they don’t accurately reflect the severity and urgency of the situation we find ourselves in. We are in a climate and ecological emergency. This is unfolding at an increasingly alarming pace. Scientists do not know if we have already passed tipping points that will further accelerate other systems towards their own tipping points. Please read the recent Chatham House report on climate related risks and the latest UNIPCC report and appreciate what it means to say that what has come out of COP26 is potentially a 2.4 degree warmer world if* all commitments are met (*this is a big if). These may feel like issues that are too geographically large for Hackney Central to be considering, but the emissions created by the actions taken by this community don’t just affect Hackney Central they have an impact at a global level, but as we know not all effects are felt equally. Those who have contributed the least to the crisis are being affected and will continue to be affected the most. This, to me, raises the moral question for our community of how we make use of our resources in a climatically just way. From the UNIPCC report we know that we have a globally shared finite carbon budget of just over 300 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent. Globally we currently use up around 40 gigatonnes each year. So for me the priorities of our community need to be framed in this reality - how much is a fair and just share of the remaining global carbon budget for the UK? How much of that fair and just share should be allocated to Hackney Central bearing in mind that the effects of climate and ecological breakdown are also and will continue to be felt by the most vulnerable in our country and our communities. In the section below I will highlight a few specific priorities with this fundamental framing.

See comments above.

Please suggest any early actions or ideas which would help address your top priority:

Appoint, employ, contract people with science and engineering experience and knowledge at all levels of community decision making process with the framing of carbon budgets and climate justice as fundamental principles. In climate breakdown, as I understand it from the scientific community, the priority should be on the rapid reduction of Green House Gas emissions. The second priority should be to increase the sequestration of Green House Gases. These need to occur at an unprecedented speed. The UNIPCC report from three years ago stated that to stay within 1.5 degrees of warming required rapid, far reaching, unprecedented changes to all aspects of society. So when you are considering policies for Hackney Central, not only think about a fair and just proportion of the global carbon budget, but also of whether your proposed policies could be characterised as rapid, far reaching and unprecedented or whether they feel more like tweaks around the edges. It may also be that the conclusion of this framing is that we in the developed world have to make do with less, have to experience a period of decline in the convenience of the way of living to which we have become accustomed. If you don’t know what your main areas of emissions are as a community, then this further underscores the importance of having scientists and engineers on board as an immediate action for you to undertake.

Recently moved to Hackney Wick and love it, but it’s so difficult to get around. I’m a young woman and coming home at night is difficult with bus and tube routes so far away. I love how vibrant the night life is, but constant noise pollution is difficult. To get a grocery shop in - we either have to go to a small corner shop or walk all the way to Supermarkets on Roman Road - more local amenities would be nice (e.g. why are there five burger locations within a mile but not much else)?

Please suggest any early actions or ideas which would help address your top priority:

Bring in more commuting routes (bus!!) or light the dark areas better

The Greener Hackney road closures have made Hackney central an absolute traffic nightmare that concentrates all the pollution taken away from more affluent streets. It’s also a public health issue because morning lane/Mare street are a highway for emergency vehicles. Traffic jams on a Sunday morning are outrageous. They didn’t exist before the road closure. Traffic needs to be distributed fairly across the borough. Stop privileging the privileged.
